Warner appointed Sunrisers Hyderabad captain

david warDavid Warner has been assigned the captaincy of Sunrisers Hyderabad for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League. Warner, who was their highest run-scorer last year, doesn’t have much experience in terms of leading a side, and has captained only once before during the first edition of the KFC Big Bash.

Sunrisers confirmed the news over their official twitter handle Wednesday night. “Congratulations @davidwarner31 on being the SRH captain for IPL 2015. We wish you all the best!”. Warner had earlier made it clear that he intends to lead the Australian national team one day and being made captain of his IPL franchise will provide him the opportunity to hone his leadership skills.

“In the back of your mind you always want to look to be a leader,” Warner had told News Limited last November. “Whether I end up getting a leadership role or not I feel Im going to be a leader anyway. (Sometimes) you need a lesson and you need to have a bit of a stuff up along the way to give you a kick in the backside. But I’ve always felt Ive got a lot to offer to the guys.”

The appointment of Warner indicates a fresh beginning for the Hyderabad-based franchise. Last year, they finished sixth in the points-table, winning only six out of the 14 matches they played. Mostly, it were the irrational choices in captaincy that cost them the most. Shikhar Dhawan, their original skipper was replaced by Darren Sammy and both of them failed to lead from the front.
