Sleeping more than 8 hours linked to a 46% increased Stroke risk.

slThe negative implications of sleep deprivation are well documented; it can cause problems with memory and concentration and has been associated with increased risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease. But a new study suggests getting too much sleep may also be bad for us: it could significantly increase the risk of stroke.

Strokes occur due to problems with the blood supply to the brain; either the blood supply is blocked or a blood vessel within the brain ruptures. A stroke is a medical emergency, and treatment must be sought as quickly as possible.

Based on study, researchers say it is unclear as to whether sleeping more than 8 hours a night – referred to as “long sleep” – is a cause or result of stroke.

“It is more likely that extended sleep duration could serve as an early warning sign of increased stroke risk, particularly in older people.”

“In any case, the finding should not be interpreted as ‘restrict sleep duration so as to cut stroke risk.'”
