Murder attempt on Cricketer Sreesanth in Tihar Jail

sreeIn a new twist to the IPL spot-fixing scandal, a relative of former Indian cricketer S Sreesanth said there was a murder attempt against the player during his stay in Tihar jail as an accused in the case.

Madhu Balakrishnan, Srisanth’s brother-in-law and a well known play-back singer in Kerala, said that the player had been shifted to another cell after a goon attacked him with a sharpened weapon.

“He told us that while he was walking inside the jail compound, a known history sheeter suddenly jumped before him, brandishing a very sharp knife..Sreesanth reacted and prevented him but the attacker injured his hand and was taken away by the jail staff,” said Madhu.

He said the family does not intend to turn this into any controversy nor are they planning to take this forward, but added that Sreesanth had to face physical and mental torture in the jail.

Sreesanth and two other players of Rajasthan Royals were arrested by Delhi police on 16 May 2013 over their alleged involvement in betting and spot-fixing during the 2013 edition of the Indian Premier League. Following this, the BCCI had imposed a life ban on him in September.
