Krishna River Management Board to meet Telugu states

waterThe Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) is likely to meet on August 24 to take decision on the requests made by Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for release of 3 tmcft water each for drinking needs.

Formal request for release of 3 tmcft of water from Nagarjunasagar reservoir was made by AP about 10 days back stating that poor monsoon rainfall has necessitated drinking water supply augmentation in Guntur, Prakasam and some parts of Krishna district. A similar request reached the board from Telangana a couple of days back. Following the request from AP, the KRMB has directed Telangana to release the required quantity of water from Nagarjunasagar with a suggestion to AP to utilise the water only for drinking needs. However, water has not been released yet. In the board’s meeting held on August 3, the two States have come to an understanding to utilise the available water in Srisailam and Sagar reservoirs for drinking needs on priority basis. Though there was request from AP for release of 20 tmc of water from Nagarjunasagar to Krishna delta for transplantation of paddy, it was turned down by Telangana.
